Moody’s Downgrade Shakes Markets
On May 19, 2025, Moody’s downgraded the U.S. sovereign credit rating from Aaa to Aa1, citing escalating fiscal deficits and rising debt levels. This marked the first time since 1917 that the U.S. lost its top-tier rating. The downgrade led to increased volatility in the Treasury market and a decline in the U.S. dollar's value.
Stock Markets Show Resilience
Despite the downgrade, U.S. stock markets displayed resilience. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 0.3% to close at 42,792.07, the S&P 500 inched up by 0.1% to 5,963.60, and the Nasdaq remained nearly flat, rising just 0.1% to 19,215.46.
Gold and Silver Futures Rise
Investors sought safe-haven assets amid market uncertainty. Gold futures rose by 1.87%, while silver prices also saw an uptick. The increased demand for precious metals reflects investor caution in the face of fiscal concerns.
U.S. Dollar Weakens
The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) fell by 0.6%, reflecting diminished investor confidence following the credit rating downgrade. The dollar's decline underscores the market's apprehension about the country's fiscal trajectory.
Crude Oil Prices Decline
Crude oil prices experienced a downturn, with Brent crude falling by 1.24%. The decrease is attributed to concerns over global demand and China's surplus crude oil, which surged in April due to high imports and decreased refinery processing.
